Ermahgerd you gaaiiizzz!!!! It's time for another nail art story! There's a 'tag you're it' challenge in one of my FB nail groups, and I was challenged by the lovely Leesha to do a summer themed story. Within a week! Five gradients.... five silhouettes.... one week.... CAN IT BE DONE??? Well yeah! And I did a VIDEO TUTORIAL to boot :D How awesome is that? So come see what I made!
So much work! OMG but I loved it! It needed to be really spontaneous and improvised, because I didn't have time to do all out sketches and concept development. Ooph! So it's not a flowing story like the last two, but it's still a lot of fun and I hope you like it :D
We start with the little girl from our epic day at the zoo, and she's making a sandcastle! Perfect summer activity, right? And such a talented little girl she is... I think mom helped, though :-p
Cake Stories, #storytime And Other Misleading Content
Oh and be sure to check out the first story, the Epic Love Story, that was inspired by a wedding cake that Clairella Cakes made.
And yes yes yes! The whole story glows in the dark! I used Serum No. 5 Pure Glow Getter, Solar Power and Orange You Sunny for the gradient. I painted all of the silhouettes using black acrylic paint and my Pure Color Glamour #1 detail brush.
It's family fun day at the beach! Our epic couple already had a little girl, and now they added a boy to the family! It's called a king's pair in my country, to have a boy and a girl. They're SO cute, playing with the ball while their parents watch. Do you see how careful the girl is with her little brother?
How To Do A French Manicure: Easy Diy Guide (with Pictures)
And yeah, this one also glows in the dark :-p I used Serum No. 5 Pure Glow Getter, a brandless glow polish from eBay (it's hell to work with but glows so bright!) and Serum No. 5 Krypton-Brite. I'm a complete Serum No. 5 convert :D I used to use the eBay glow polishes for everything, but they're really hard to work with. The Serum polishes glow just as brightly but my goodness, they are so much smoother! Not speaking as a reviewer, I bought all of my Serum No. 5 polishes with my own money, at the Hypnotic Polish shop!
Dad LOVES his cute kids and is having some guy time with his son. Ofcourse in a moment when mom isn't looking, because she would never allow this! Don't drop the little fella, okay?
I used Serum No. 5 Pure Glow Getter, Glowin' Of Eden and Indi-Glo for this gradient. The sponges I have are makeup wedges from Ici Paris XL by the way, they're really soft and have tiny tiny pores, so the polish doesn't get gobbled up never to be seen again.
Love And Hugs Story Time And Luminary Art
I spoke to one of my friends today who told me that for her, it works better to dampen the sponge and wring it out before applying polish for the gradient. We think it might have something to do with the sort of sponge, that this works better for some people. I tried it and it didn't make any difference for me, but if you're having trouble with your gradients, you might wanna try this!
Every day comes to an end, and this one ends with storytime. I hope it's not too scary, or he will have nightmares! Naaaa he'll be okay :D
For this purple gradient, I used Serum No. 5 Pure Glow Getter (yes, uh-gain), Awesome Blossom and Ultra Violet. I love how these polishes all glow in different colors! Way at the bottom of this post I'll have a collage with only the glow pics together, you can really see it then!
It's Time To Stop Judging Women For Wearing Nail Art
And when the kids have gone to sleep.... mom and dad steal away for a minute to rekindle the love they had in their very first story <3 They are so right for eachother, and they enjoy their beautiful little family with every single day. It really is EPIC!
The way to make a smooth gradient: Apply white polish first, or I like to use either the lightest color or the least opaque polish as a base. Make sure this is really dry before you start!
Tape off your cuticles for easy cleanup! I use scotch tape for the part around my fingers and medical tape (the sensitive kind) for the sides, because it's more pliable. Take your makeup wedge and apply your polish in stripes. You can do this with any amount of colors, as long as it still fits on your nail. Make sure the stripes overlap a bit for easy blending!

Sponge the colors onto the nail, making a round movement from side to side. Also moving up and down a little bit to make the colors blend. Load your sponge again and repeat. Top coat and you're done!
And for sharing purposes (and also just because it makes me happy to see them all together), I have some collages for you guys! I hope you enjoyed this story and feel free to share away!!I love popping into my local nail bar and being able to switch off for an hour or so while I indulge in the centuries-old practice of having my talons tended to.
Depending on how much time I have or my mood (and sometimes my budget!), I'll try out whatever nail trend I've seen on Instagram.

I've matched my nails to my outfits, had bling stuck on them, promoted events through the nails — you name it, I'll try it at least once.
I remember the first time I got my first set of acrylics. I was 18 and I opted for a French manicure with a twist — the pointy tips would be a rainbow of bright neon colours.
I still remember the nail technician carefully picking out individual acrylic nails to match the shape of my own nails, and then carefully applying powdered gel to hold the shape in place before carefully and meticulously shaping each nail one by one, and then applying the colours.
Looking To Learn: Art & Storytime
Upon seeing my nails, a few friends at the time remarked at how "tacky" they looked and why I bothered to get my nails done like that. I spent the next few days painfully peeling them off. I didn't attempt to get acrylics for at least a decade after that.
Ancient Egyptian royalty, Nefertiti, painted her talons to signify her noble status. Her colour of choice (and my go-to mani colour)? Red.
These days, as much as I love the look of long, stiletto-style nails, on a practical level, I only get them if I'm going away on holiday. As someone whose career depends typing for hours on end, the length tends to get in the way — that, and I've also had awful instances when my nails have been damaged from the gels and acrylics used.

As a result, I'm left to admire the beautiful creations I come across on Instagram and fantasise about when I might be able to realistically emulate some of the styles.
In recent years, long, artificial nails have gained mainstream popularity, largely due to social media and celebrities like Cardi B embracing it.
My braided hair is more than a fashion choice These days, I'm fortunate to be able to wear my hair as I please without retribution. And it's for that reason that I braid my hair, Santilla Chingaipe writes.Read more
A Hard Gel Manicure Is The Secret To My Long Nails — Here's Why
In ancient Babylon, for example, it was the men that would colour their nails with kohl. In those days, the colours you wore on your nails were a marker of your social status — black symbolised you were very important people, while green was reserved for people in the lower classes.
Ancient Egyptian royalty, Nefertiti, also painted her talons to signify her noble status. Her colour of choice (and my go-to mani colour)? Red.
While these bright colours were embraced by these beauties, women who belonged to lower social classes had to wear basic pastel colours.
Nail Art: Golden Goose
Bright colours weren't only a signifier of status in ancient Egypt, but in ancient China as well. There, women also grew their nails long and painted to denote their high-ranking status.
With the emergence of nail technology, nail length became a symbol of class in the 20th century. Middle-class women favoured short, nude nails in the 1900s to mark their privilege.
And that hasn't really changed. While many women (and men) are embracing this trend, working-class women — especially women of colour — have historically been derided for embracing long, embellished talons.
The Polished Koi: Bee's Knees Lacquer
An example of this is the late track-and-field athlete, Florence "Flo-Jo" Griffith Joyner. She broke world records in the late 80s on the running track while also embracing her love of glamour and beauty. However, her successes on the field would be overshadowed with the emphasis journalists would place on her nails and divided opinion, from admiration to disgust.
I think about women like Flo-Jo who chose to express themselves and their individuality through their nails, yet were "othered" for it.
I think about the ways in which society continues to
